Increasingly competitive market conditions, more discerning customers, and rapidly changing technological requirements were already putting many companies under pressure. Then Covid-19 came along and shook the world to its core, putting many more companies either out of business or facing an uncertain future.
This paper analyzes how European companies are adapting their organizations to institutionalize a “New way of Working”, to go beyond ‘smart working’ as we used to define it. After discussing some of the benefits of smart working, we illustrate the likely implications for organizational design, people management, infrastructural enablers and HR systems.
